Working From Home When You’re In Space

The term “working from home”, or WFH, is very common in the last year as vast majority of the planet’s population had been put under varying degrees of stay at home or quarantine during the ongoing Covid pandemic that continues to plague Earth.

In space, we mostly work from home when you’re in a space station, starship or capsule, or even on a settlement. Here, each of us have more than one duty and depending on the size of the crew complement, even commanders has a few specialties that require them to perform that the chief engineer is unable to do.

As a kid on my ship, I go to school five hours a day in the mess hall or cargo bay depending on the time of day or duties are being performed there. All of our classes are online much like yours when your schools were shut down and everyone is responsible for making sure we do our homework and learn everything we were supposed to. Our captain would called us in once a week as a group and sometimes one-by-one to grill us on what we learn that week.

When we are not in school, we as assigned to different departments to do our share of duties for the ship. I like working in the hydroponic labs and kitchen while my sister likes the engineering and maintenance duties. I like it too but I am very good at coding the mods.

For everyone else, the adults, their place of work are a couple of decks up or down, a walk that is 10 minutes way at their quarters.

With the ongoing pandemic, I think many of you will continue to study or work from home. If you feel isolated, think of what it is like when we are in a ship out in the cold dark space weeks at a time. At least you get to go out and place, bike, or just go for a walk.

If you’re reading this, you probably are like me and do not mind a little lockdown (in your home or space) because we all have a part to play whether you live on a starship called Curiosity or in an unknown little town called Pasadena in a state called California on an small watery planet called earth.
